TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) is a complicated acute or chronic physiologic issue that encompasses a wide range of problems and symptoms. These joint and muscle problems are complex.
Symptoms may include:
-pain the joint
-pain in the ear, ringing in the ear and dizziness
-muscle pain in the head, face, neck and shoulders
-headaches and migraines
-limited range of motion of the jaw
-joint sounds (clicking or popping) and jaw locking
TMD may be caused by trauma, muscle tension, a joint disc issue and/or an incorrect occlusion.
Treatment depends on the cause and the problem but always starts with a comprehensive examination. Treatment may include TENS therapy, ultrasound therapy, MLS/cold laser therapy, dental appliance/orthotic construction and/or orthodontics.
